Wirex Help Centre
Temporary changes for UK customers

How long will this be for?

These are temporary measures and although we do not yet have a defined timeframe, we hope they will only last a short period. We’ll inform you of any further updates as soon as we can. It’s important to note that these measures are only affecting customers in the UK and not the EEA region.

They’ve been put in place following communications from the FCA. Wirex is currently one of a small number of companies in the UK operating under the Temporary Permissions Regime (TPR), with the aim of receiving permanent registration. Implementing these measures will ensure that Wirex is operating at the highest possible standard.

What can I actually do with my account/card?

These temporary measures are only affecting some functionality of what our UK customers can do, and will come into effect on 8th April 2021. You can still:

  • Exchange your existing cryptocurrency into fiat currency and cryptocurrency in-app, which you can then spend with your Wirex card or withdraw from an ATM

  • Send and receive money to and from other Wirex customers

  • Transfer crypto to external wallets

However, from the 8th April 2021, you temporarily won't be able to:

  • Add funds to your currency accounts, including from an external crypto wallet, via bank transfers or using a credit or debit card

  • Make fiat-to-cryptocurrency exchanges in the Wirex app

We’re hoping to resume normal activity as soon as possible, and will keep you updated when this happens, but if you need any further clarification about what you can and can’t do, head over to our Community Forum.

Why is this happening? Are the FCA targeting Wirex?

Wirex is an Authorised Electronic Money Institution which is regulated by the FCA and, as such, takes all matters of compliance with the highest degree of seriousness. We've chosen to be based in the UK to work to the highest level of scrutiny under reputed institutions recognised and respected the world over. Wirex always welcomes, and always cooperates with, requests from regulatory entities to maintain these standards.

These temporary measures have been put in place following communications from the FCA. Wirex is currently one of a small number of companies in the UK operating under the Temporary Permissions Regime (TPR), with the aim of receiving permanent registration.

Implementing these measures for all UK-registered customers will ensure that Wirex is operating at the highest possible standard, and we can continue offering our services to everyone, including the UK, for years to come.

Can I still make crypto-to-crypto exchanges?

These temporary measures are only affecting some functionality of what our UK customers can do, and will come into effect on 8th April 2021. You can still exchange your existing cryptocurrency into other cryptocurrency and fiat currency in-app, which you can then spend with your Wirex card or withdraw from an ATM.

Is this only affecting Wirex UK customers?

Yes, this only affects UK customers, and does not affect customers in the rest of the EEA region, or elsewhere in the world. These are temporary measures and we hope they will only last a short period, but we’ll inform you of any further updates as soon as we can.
