Many cryptocurrency exchanges take weeks to verify accounts. When you sign up for a Wirex account, expect to get verified within minutes in most parts of the world. If a manual check is required (this is necessary for some countries), you’ll still have a fully functioning account within just two days.
What’s the point of account verification? Isn’t Bitcoin supposed to be anonymous?
Account verification might seem like a hassle, but it’s becoming absolutely essential.
By law, financial companies are required to verify the identities of their customers. This is called KYC (Know Your Customer) verification and it’s a powerful weapon in the fight against financial fraud, money laundering, identity theft, corruption, and terrorism.
That’s why Wirex takes KYC seriously. Financial crimes devastate the lives of millions of people and cost billions each year. By taking a few minutes to let us know who you are, you’ll be helping to fight financial crime and build a better future for everyone.
Any reputable exchange will ask you to verify your identity. If they don’t, they’re either only offering very limited functionality or, more likely, they’re breaking the law. And that means they probably won’t be around very long.
Wirex is here for the long run. We’re committed to providing a service you’ll be able to trust for years to come — not one that encourages crime or is likely to disappear without warning, taking your money with it.
Of course, you can still expect privacy. Your personal details are stored securely and aren’t linked to your public blockchain records.
How do I verify my account?
It’s a lot simpler than you might expect. To verify your account, all you need to do is provide us with proof of your identity and your address. This means uploading two documents:
A valid, government-issued document that includes your full name, date of birth, a photograph, and an expiration or validity date.
This could be your passport, identity card or driver’s license. Make sure you upload a high-quality scan that shows all the important details.
A document showing your address, dated within the last 3 months and including your full name, address and a date.
This could be a utility bill, a bank statement with a banker’s stamp, a council tax bill or a government-issued letter. Mobile phone bills and online bank statements aren’t accepted and make sure it’s no older than 3 months. Of course, this also needs to be a high-quality scan without anything blurred or cropped out.
If you’ve spilt coffee on your passport or put your driver’s license through the wash, we probably can’t accept it. We need to be able to verify all the details, so submitting anything unreadable is unfortunately not accepted. It’s all part of providing you with a secure, fully regulated service.
Assuming your documents are correct, you’ll be good to go within minutes!
If you’re in need of a walk through, here’s a helpful guide our community manager Rapha put together showing you step by step how you can get yourself verified.
What if I’m not a permanent resident of the country I live in?
If you’re not a permanent resident of the country you live in, don’t worry. A resident card or identification document issued by the country you’re currently living in is also fine.
What if my proof of identity/address is in another language?
That’s fine too! Just attach a professionally produced translation of the document
