This year’s International Women in Engineering Day is taking place on the 23rd July, with the theme of #MAKESAFETYSEEN. The Day endeavours to celebrate women from the engineering sector, and here at Wirex, we’ve got a huge number of engineers developing the Wirex product to ensure we’re an industry-leader. And of course, the theme of safety

Celebrating women in the crypto sector is an important goal of Wirex’s already, so to celebrate this year’s IWED, we’ve spoken to three of our female Engineers to get some insights into their roles:

Anastasiia Kuzmina, Help Desk Team Lead

What do you do?

I have over four years of experience working in the IT field, where I have been part of various teams. Initially, I primarily focused on providing support and troubleshooting for technical issues (Ops). However, in recent years, when I learned the field, I have taken a proactive role in managing IT processes and driving improvements through automation (Dev) within the organisation.

What does it mean to be a female Engineer in crypto?

  1. Breaking stereotypes
  2. Paving the way for diversity

Historically, the Engineering field has always been male-dominated, and nowadays it is changing. As a female Engineer in crypto, I have the opportunity to challenge traditional norms and maybe inspire other women to pursue careers in tech.

Can you share any tips for other women getting into engineering?

a. Engineering is a field that constantly evolves, so it's crucial to stay updated with the latest technologies and trends.

b. When progressing in your Engineering career, remember to support other women like Anastasiia Koval in the field too!

Anastasiia Koval, Help Desk Agent

What do you do?

One of my tasks is the optimisation and setting up of processes that frequently involve the integration of platforms that employees of our enterprise use.

What does it mean to be a female Engineer in crypto?

I’ve been in the sphere a little over a year now and can tell you that along with my desire to work in this field, one of the crucial components that keeps me here is my supportive Manager who is always able to give feedback and share their ideas. The fact that she’s a female makes the support kind of special to me. It's worth mentioning that I have a degree in International Relations, and prior to my interview  at Wirex, I tended to have some prejudice stereotyping that I might not be able to cope in a space I’ve never tried before.

Therefore, give it a try! This method is classic but effective.

In all honesty, I have mixed feeling that nowadays we still highlight “women in ...” since I’d like to hope that we don’t need to point this out. But on the other hand, it means that society is progressing by recognising them! So here’s a message to my dear females, I wish you profound optimism and inner discipline to become the next supportive example to others, and yourselves!

Diana Aparina, HR Learning & Development Specialist

What do you do?

In my experience, even if you are not a "tech" specialist in Engineering, you still need to keep up with all the tech stuff. As an L&D specialist, you would have to understand the product and use the product, because it impacts so many processes.

What does it mean to be a female Engineer in crypto?

It means that you have to hear "So when do I buy Bitcoin?" in a conversation every time I mention that I work in crypto LOL.

Listen, if you're not willing to try, how are you going to learn? Don't be afraid to be who you are. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. Don’t be deterred away from entering this field because it’s male dominated. You’re just as good, if not better.
