We’re excited to announce that we’ve launched the FLOKI and PEPE tokens on the Wirex app. These tokens are the latest meme tokens to become popular in the crypto world, following on from the hype around Dogecoin. 

What are meme coins? 

Memes have become a huge part of the internet today and are common across social media. Since then, memes have infiltrated the crypto world; I’m sure you’ve heard of Dogecoin (DOGE) which was taken from the popular Doge meme. In fact, it was originally created by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmeras as a joke version of bitcoin (BTC), but was trying to give a fun and approachable face for the sometimes overwhelming crypto world. This was particular true back in 2013 when DOGE was created and crypto was still in its infancy.   

Although there are few use cases for DOGE, it accepted as a legitimate form of exchange by some merchants. Therefore, what started as a joke quickly became one of the most popular tokens to exist. Thanks to support from well-known celebs like Snoops Dogg and Elon Musk (who actually named himself ‘The Dogemaster’ on Twitter), it is currently the tenth largest crypto in the world. What are FLOKI and PEPE? 

Since DOGE, we’ve seen many other meme tokens emerge, including Shiba Inu (SHIB), SafeMoon (SAFEMOON), Hoge Finance (HOGE), Mona Coin (MONA), Tiger King ($CAT), and most recently, Floki (FLOKI) and Pepe (PEPE). In case you don’t know much about these tokens, read more below: 

FLOKI 

Originally named after Elon Musk’s dog, Floki, the FLOKI token began as a memecoin, but the project has since developed to rival the likes of the popular SHIB token. This decentralised web3 project now operates across the DeFi, NFT and metaverse spaces, where FLOKI is mostly used as the utility token for the ecosystem. It is thought to differ from other tokens with their three-pillar philosophy of meme status, utility, and charitability. 

PEPE 

Launched in April 2023, the PEPE token is a meme based on the Pepe the frog cartoon character, taken from a 2005 comic by cartoonist Matt Furie. It was created by a team of anonymous developers and is described as having no intrinsic value or use cases beyond speculation and entertainment purposes.
